We set our production of this ancient story in 2020 because the play speaks to our contemporary moment and culture in important ways. Soyinka suggests that sacrifice is needed for a society to transform. Thebes is a society out of balance, like our contemporary world. What might our own culture require to restore it to balance? What would we be willing to sacrifice for a just world? A balanced planet? A healthy humanity?
